John Hurney
John W. Hurney is a Senior Attorney with the law firm of Callahan & Blaine, in Santa Ana, California, where his practice focuses on complex litigation, including business and contract disputes, legal malpractice, business fraud, serious personal injury, wrongful death and product liability cases. Mr. Hurney is an experienced civil litigator who since 2005 is also an Adjunct Professor of Law at Pepperdine University School of Law Faculty, where he teaches with their Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution, the Nation’s premier Dispute Resolution Program. Mr. Hurney has also served as an arbitrator and a mediator for the Los Angeles County and San Bernardino County court systems.
Mr. Hurney has worked for some of Los Angeles’ oldest and most respected firms. Mr. Hurney has represented some of America's largest companies, including United Air Lines, Inc., Granite Construction Company, McDonald's Corporation, Brother Records, Inc. (the corporate entity for The Beach Boys), AM Best Company, Century Surety Company, Jack in the Box, Inc., Knight Transportation, Foodmaker, Inc., Gold's Gym, Smith Food & Drug Centers, Inc. and LA Fitness International.
Mr. Hurney was admitted to the California Supreme Court in 1992 and to the Arizona Supreme Court in 2003. He is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts for the Central, Northern, Eastern and Southern Districts of California, and the Ninth Circuit Federal Court of Appeals.
Mr. Hurney graduated from Pepperdine University School of Law where he also received a Certificate in Dispute Resolution. At Pepperdine he won the school’s Settlement & Negotiations Competition and went on to represent Pepperdine at the ABA Regional Competition in Denver where he placed second. Mr. Hurney obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Hampshire, with a double major in Political Science (emphasis on Soviet Foreign Policy) and in Theatre. While at the University of New Hampshire, he was a member of the academic honor society, Order of Omega.
Mr. Hurney has excelled at both the trial and appellate levels. His appellate decisions include a favorable Appellate ruling for the Beach Boys, Brother Records, Inc. v. Gaba (9th Cir. 2008) 2008 WL 2649640. Mr. Hurney also co-authored Beware of Opposing Counsel Bearing Gifts, published in the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s County Bar Update, March, 2008
