On Sept. 18, the California Highway Patrol initiated an investigation into a fatal car accident that transpired on Highway 116 near Petaluma. Reportedly, one person died and two other people were injured in the head-on crash.
According to authorities, an 83-year-old man was behind the wheel of a northbound Lexus that crossed into southbound traffic on the highway and hit a BMW head-on. Reportedly, the octogenarian suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
A representative for CHP reported that the 53-year-old driver of the BMW suffered injuries as a result of the collision. Authorities described his injuries as major. A 56-year-old passenger from the Lexus also suffered injuries on account of the incident. Authorities described her injuries as moderate. Emergency personnel transported both injured individuals to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
It was not immediately clear why the driver of the Lexus crossed into oncoming traffic; however, it does not appear that the 83-year-old driver of the vehicle was impaired at the time of the wreck, according to CHP. Investigators indicated that the man was traveling at 50 to 55 mph when he traversed the centerline.
