A two-vehicle collision near Silver Bridge Road injured a mother and son on Nov. 28. According to authorities, the driver of a Chevrolet Equinox traveling westbound crossed over the yellow line and collided with an oncoming Toyota Tacoma traveling eastbound. The accident occurred around 1:50 pm and caused the Tacoma to roll onto the south side of the highway. The SUV traveled several hundred feet down the road, went through a field and crashed into a fence.
Police said the 59-year-old mother and her son were taken to the hospital; it is unknown how extensive their injuries were. The two women who were in the Equinox suffered minor injuries. The 25-year-old driver of the SUV was detained on suspicion of driving under the influence. The Oregon resident told officers that she was on her way to a concert in Las Vegas; however, police officers could not determine why she was heading west on the highway away from Nevada.
The victims in the Tacoma were trapped in the pickup because it was lying on its roof. A couple who arrived at the scene shortly after the accident happened helped to free the son, and firefighters later pried open the passenger door to free the woman trapped inside.
The woman driving the SUV allegedly told the good Samaritan couple that she had fallen asleep behind the wheel and had awoke just before swaying into oncoming traffic. She is also suspected of driving under the influence. Both fatigue and impairment could be ample signs of negligence in a personal injury lawsuit.
