California accident kills 1 cyclist, injures another

Reports say that two bicyclists were struck by a GMC Yukon in Paso Robles on Nov. 28. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. while the two individuals were riding their bikes near the Adelaida Road and Nacimiento Lake Drive intersection. A female cyclist died at the scene.

The driver of the Yukon, an 18-year-old Paso Robles man, reportedly told California Highway Patrol officers that his cell phone was in his lap prior to the incident. He said that when it fell to the floor, he attempted to reach for it. However, the vehicle in front of him had come to a stop, and he swerved to avoid a wreck. In the process, he hit the two bicyclists.

The second cyclist, a 59-year-old man, was severely injured in the crash, and he was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. According to sources, both victims were from out of town. It was not mentioned if the Yukon driver would be charged or cited.

The family of the victim killed in a similar accident might want to pursue legal action against the driver liable for the incident. With the help of a personal injury lawyer, the victim's family could file a wrongful death claim for both their emotional and financial losses stemming from the sudden death of their loved one. Compensation from the claim could help a family reduce the burden of burial expenses and loss of future financial support. The financial award could also address issues such as loss of companionship and guidance.
