What are some common head injuries among young crash victims?

Young children who are involved in car crashes sustain many different types of injuries, but head injuries are especially common. Sadly, head injuries can haunt a child for the rest of their life, and they can create a number of challenges for children. For example, children may suffer due to the emotional consequences of a head injury, becoming depressed or struggling with anger. Or, they may have problems in school and difficulty remembering things. It is important for parents to understand the risks their kids face in the event an accident takes place.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that head injuries are the most common type of injury sustained by children in motor vehicle collisions. Moreover, data shows that children under the age of one are especially likely to sustain a head injury during a crash. The NHTSA reports that data taken from 1999 to 2007 shows that among all children who were involved in traffic wrecks, cerebrum injuries were the most frequent. Moreover, skull base fractures, concussions and unconsciousness were also common among young victims of car wrecks.

Aside from head injuries, there are many other ways in which young passengers are injured in motor vehicle crashes. Parents should do everything in their power to prevent an accident from happening, of course. However, these wrecks are always a risk due to the negligence of others, even when a parent does everything that they can to keep their child safe on the road. As a result, careless drivers who cause these injuries should be held responsible in court.
