Man killed in 3-car accident

A 22-year-old man is dead following a three-car accident that also injured another person and totalled all three vehicles. California Highway Patrol in Oakley have confirmed the death of a Byron resident after he was identified on Oct. 14 following the Oct. 12 accident. The car accident is still under investigation as police have not yet determined whether intoxication was a factor.

According to the report, a pickup truck driven by an unknown individual was headed eastbound on Delta and had slowed to enter his residence when his vehicle was approached by another car from behind. The 22-year-old driver of the other car was traveling at a high rate of speed and attempted to pass the pickup truck in the westbound lane. This caused a collision between the two vehicles that sent the speeding car across the street into a third car.

The driver of the speeding car was not wearing a seat belt and was killed on the scene. A 21-year-old woman who was a passenger in that car was injured and airlifted to a local hospital. The driver of the pickup truck suffered only minor injuries. He was treated and released from a medical center in Antioch.

As the driver of the speeding car was killed in the accident, no criminal charges will be filed even if California police determine he was responsible for the crash. However, the injured parties are entitled to file personal injury lawsuits against his estate in a civil court. These suits would require evidence of the driver's material contribution to the car accident in order for the court to award damages to the injured parties.
