'Affluenza' teen and family facing multiple civil suits

People nationwide have been outraged by the case of the 16-year-old who received 10 years probation for a drunk driving accident that killed four people and injured nine others in June. That outrage hit home for residents of Orange County when it was reported in the Dallas Star-Telegram and other media sources that the teen's parents would pay $450,000 per year for him to serve his probation in a rehabilitation facility near Newport Beach. As most people know, a psychologist testifying during the trial claimed that the teen suffered from "affluenza" – meaning he felt a "sense of entitlement" and little sense of responsibility.

Newly-discovered crime lab error could lead to more DUI charges

The saga of the Orange County Crime Lab and mistakes that could affect the cases of drivers charged with driving under the influence continues. Recently the lab admitted that results of blood-alcohol tests in 2,200 cases involving DUIs were incorrect. Reportedly, 900 people already convicted of DUIs were impacted by the findings.

Laguna Beach physician facing multiple charges for head-on crash

The case of a Laguna Beach physician who is accused of killing two fellow motorists this past spring will not move forward in court until next month. A judge in Orange County Superior Court in Newport Beach agreed to postpone the doctor's arraignment to mid-December at the request of his attorney.

Mother of Orange County freeway killer on trial for hit-and-run

The mother of a young man who terrorized Orange County earlier this year is now on trial for causing a car accident that injured three people, and then leaving the scene. The woman's son made news this February when he carjacked a vehicle and went on a freeway shooting spree in the area, killing three people. The rampage ended when he shot himself to death.

Big rig, multiple vehicles in fiery freeway crash in Pomona

A fiery crash on the 10 Freeway in Pomona on August 19 left one person dead and ten injured. It also left all lanes of the freeway closed in both directions overnight as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames and clean up spilled fuel. Four of the injured people were in critical condition at a local hospital.

L.A. City Council seeks further Venice Boardwalk safeguards

Just days after a driver plowed through a crowd of pedestrians in Venice, California, the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously to instruct city officials to come up with safety measures for the iconic beachfront promenade. Councilman Mike Bonin, who represents the area, called for barriers at Ocean Front Walk's most hazardous intersections to help protect pedestrians until a permanent solution is developed.

Wife of driver in Bay Area limo fire says he was distracted

The estranged wife of the limo driver who was behind the wheel when the vehicle became engulfed in a massive blaze earlier this year has spoken publicly about her husband's actions and state of mind just before the tragic incident. She told a local news station that they were arguing on the phone just prior to the May 4 fire that killed five passengers in the stretch limousine traveling on the San Mateo Bridge in Northern California.

OC man sues for injuries suffered during police manhunt

The fallout from the Christopher Dorner manhunt that had Southern California on edge earlier this year continues. A Redondo Beach man who was injured when police mistook his truck for the one believed to be driven by Dorner is suing the City of Torrance. The incident occurred during the search for the fired police officer who was wanted for killing police officers and their family members.

LAPD officer's daughter arrested in deadly Gardena hit-and-run

A young woman whose father is a sergeant with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) was arrested for the hit-and-run death of a 60-year-old man riding his bicycle in Gardena. The 22-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, perjury, filing a false police report, and felony hit and run.

Los Angeles bus driver killed by tow truck driver

A bus driver for the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) was killed in downtown Los Angeles when a flatbed tow truck traveling at sixty miles per hour ran a red light at Broadway and slammed into her. The collision tore open the front of the bus. It also sheared off a fire hydrant and destroyed the front of a nearby 7-Eleven store. There were no passengers on the bus at the time of the crash.
