Edward Susolik, one of Orange County’s most distinguished insurance-coverage attorneys, will discuss California’s independent-counsel doctrine under the Cumis decision and Civil Code § 2860. The presentation will focus on providing civil litigators with practical advice to navigate the legal and ethical issues that arise whenever a policyholder is defended by a liability insurer subject to a reservation of rights.

On December 8, 2017, Edward Susolik will present his informative and practical seminar entitled “Insurance Law for Business Litigators” to the Business Litigation Section of the Orange County Bar Association. This is the 5th time in the last 25 years that the Business Litigation section has asked Mr. Susolik to present this powerful seminar to its members.

The seminar provides a comprehensive analysis of insurance law issues for business litigation attorneys of all types, whether plaintiff or defense. Mr. Susolik will provide the policyholder perspective on the various insurance issues arising out of business litigation, including the duty to defend, Cumis counsel, coverage and bad faith issues and other critical and practical applications. The seminar typically draws an extremely large audience, cutting across all aspects of business litigation (both plaintiff and defendant) and insurance expertise (from insurance novice to expert).

Mr. Susolik’s co-speaker at the seminar is the esteemed Eldon Edson, insurance coverage partner of Selman Breitman. Mr. Edson will provide the insurance company perspective on the various matters discussed. Callahan & Blaine and Selman Breitman have opposed each other in many cases during the last 25 years, but have always maintained the highest professional relationship. In fact, Mr. Susolik and managing partner Neil Selman have presented numerous seminars and speeches on insurance law together over the years, including an annual seminar on “Insurance Law for Litigators” to the State Bar Convention for almost 10 years.

March 3, 2017 – edward susolik to present “ten common sense rules of trial advocacy: perspectives from the bench and the bar” seminar at orange county bar association business litigation section.

On March 3, 2017, Edward Susolik will present an informative MCLE presentation at the Orange County Bar Association Business Litigation Section meeting entitled “”Ten Common Sense Rules of Trial Advocacy: Perspectives from the Bench and Bar.”

Mr. Susolik will be presenting the program with Judge Deborah Servino of the Orange County Superior Court.

The speech is a modified reprise of the presentation that Judge Servino and Mr. Susolik have given at the OCBA Last Dash for the last two years. Here are some of the highlights:

Going to trial is a dynamic process. Trial attorneys sometimes become so wrapped up in the case, they forget the common sense rules that make the difference between success and failure. This program will explore those rules from a judicial as well as practicing attorney’s perspective. Topics will include “The Golden Rule,” trial themes, the “Eight Great Cases of Trial Advocacy,” trial organization, the “KISS” approach, the “Three C’s” and use of courtroom technology.

Mr. Susolik has presented over 100 seminars and speeches during the last 20 years. For example, Mr. Susolik was Chair for 11 years straight of the OCBA Insurance Law Section, and has volunteered hundreds of hours to the Orange County Bar Association through educational and other activities.

The seminar was held at the Radisson Hotel at 4545 MacArthur Bld. in Newport Beach, California.


January 14, 2017 – edward susolik presented “a dozen common sense rules of trial advocacy: tips from the bench and the bar” seminar at orange county bar association “last dash”

On January 14, 2017, Edward Susolikl presented an informative MCLE presentation at the annual Orange County Bar Association “Last Dash” MCLE Seminar entitled ” A Dozen Common Sense Rules of Trial Advocacy: Tips From the Bench and the Bar.” Among the topics that Mr. Susolik covered are trial themes, preparation, civility and professionalism and other trial strategies.

Mr. Susolik presented the program with Judge Deborah Servino of the Orange County Superior Court.

On September 17, 2015, Callahan & Blaine attorneys Daniel J. Callahan and Edward Susolik will present an informative evening seminar entitled “Trial of Personal Injury Cases for the 21st Century” to attorneys from Orange County, California. The presentation is sponsored by the Orange County Bar Association, and will take place from 6:00PM to 9:15PM at the Westin South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, California.

The seminar will also include the judicial perspective from Judge Thierry Colaw and the defense perspective from noted defense attorneys Edward Leonard of Harrington, Foxx and Adrienne D. Cohen, of the Law Offices of Adrienne D. Cohen.

The presentation will include a discussion of the fundamentals of trial practice of personal injury cases on the plaintiff and defense sides, as well as the judicial perspective. On October 9, 2015, Daniel J. Callahan will present a comprehensive and informative seminar entitled “Trial Hall of Fame Series: Voir Dire” at the 2015 California State Bar Convention in Anaheim, California. Dan will be presenting the seminar with fellow legendary trial attorney e. robert (bob) wallach. The seminar will cover the topic of voir dire, as two celebrated hall of fame trial attorneys share their thoughts and practical advice on the art and science of jury selection. The seminar will be held at the State Bar Convention in Anaheim, California. The State Bar Convention is scheduled from October 8 to 11, 2015.

Daniel J. Callahan was a featured speaker at a seminar put on by the Orange County Bar Association entitled “Homegrown Success Stories: Thriving Firms in Orange County and How They Got There.” The seminar was held on Thursday, February 19, 2015 at 5:00PM at the Hilton Hotel in Costa Mesa, California. Mr. Callahan spoke on numerous topics, including how Callahan & Blaine got started, the history and success of the firm, any early challenges, managing people, marketing and advertising, ethical issues and best practices for boutique litigation firms. Mr. Callahan also provided lessons and tips on how to develop the skills to manage a medium-sized firm that provides high quality legal services to clients.

July 30, 2014 — edward susolik gave speech at the 19th annual “insurance law update” seminar for orange county bar association – provided policyholder perspective

On July 30, 2014, Edward Susolik provided the policyholder perspective for the 19th straight year at the Orange County Bar Association “Annual Insurance Law Update” seminar. The topics that Mr. Susolik discussed included bad faith, duty to defend, first party insurance, litigation of complex insurance coverage issues, review of California Supreme Court cases, Cumis counsel, punitive damages and numerous other insurance topics.

In addition, Mr. Susolik provided his annual hour-long Survey of 2013/2014 Insurance Cases, which is an analysis and summary of all insurance cases decided by California state and federal courts during the prior 12 months. Mr. Susolik has provided this annual survey, which is typically the highlight of the seminar, for the last 18 years. Further, Mr. Susolik provided his highly valued handout to all attendees which contains written detailed case summaries and analyses of all of the insurance cases decided during the last 12 months.

Daniel j. Callahan presented at santa monica bar trial seminar: the art and science of persuasion on may 22, 2014

Daniel J. Callahan spoke on the “Art and Science of Persuasion” at Santa Monica Bar Trial Seminar on May 22, 2014, from 6:00PM to 9:30PM. Mr. Callahan discussed the seminal $30 Million settlement he obtained against Freedom Communications after two months of trial, in a case entitled Gonzalez v Freedom Communications. He also discussed the genesis of the that class action case in a personal injury action entitled Campbell v Orange County Register. The seminar was held at the Le Meridian Delafina Hotel in Santa Monica, California.


Edward susolik gave a live webinar entitled “summary judgment motions: advanced strategies for civil litigation” on april 8, 2014

Edward Susolik spoke live at a Webinar entitled “Summary Judgment Motions: Advanced Strategies for Civil Litigation” for the Strafford company. The live Webinar was conducted on Tuesday, April 8, at 10:00am-11:30am.

The webinar covered many strategic issues relating to summary judgment motions, which are a critical first stage in civil litigation. A successful summary judgment motion will save clients legal expenses and litigation costs, which in business litigation can be in the millions. Planning and effectively using motions for summary judgment (MSJs) present litigators with a number of challenges. Mr. Susolik reviewed the intricate nuances and specialized approaches involved in a successful MSJ practice, including whether to file, timing the motion, using discovery and third-party discovery.

Mr. Susolik also addressed perspectives and guidance on the following issues::

  • What must be considered in deciding to pursue a MSJ and in balancing the risk of revealing key trial strategy with the likelihood of success?
  • What strategies must be implemented in performing discovery with a MSJ in mind?
  • How can counsel most effectively make use of third-party discovery?
  • What are the best practices for counsel to anticipate the admissibility of evidence?

After the presentations, there was a live question and answer session.

March 13, 2014 – callahan & blaine celebrated its 30 year anniversary: “in celebration of 30 years of excellence”

On March 13, 2014, Callahan & Blaine celebrated its 30 Year Anniversary with a grand party and open house entitled “In Celebration of 30 Years of Excellence.”

The festivities were held at the offices of Callahan & Blaine, and included fine dining, drinks, entertainment (including a band, a magician and other entertainers) and an open house celebration for Callahan & Blaine clients and friends.

Dan Callahan opened the law firm on St. Patricks Day, March 17, 1984. From those humble beginnings, Callahan & Blaine has grown to have more than 20 lawyers and become one of the leading litigation powerhouse law firms on the West Coast. Since 1984, Callahan & Blaine has set numerous records for the highest settlements, judgments and verdicts in Orange County history, including the following:

Highest jury verdict in Orange County history: $934 million

Highest personal injury settlement (exclusive of multiparty litigation) in United States history: $50 million

Highest insurance bad faith judgment in Orange County history: $57 million

Highest employment settlement in Orange County history: $38 million

Highest business verdict and judgment in Orange County history: $934 million (see above)

On March 26, 2014, Edward Susolik presented an informative and practical seminar entitled “The Cumis Conundrum: The Debate Rages On” to insurance lawyers and in-house counsel from Orange County, California. The presentation was sponsored by the Insurance Law Section of the Orange County Bar Association, at 12:00PM at the OCBA offices in Newport Beach, California.

The seminar addressed the various insurance issues arising out of Cumis counsel situations. Mr. Susolik provided the policyholder perspective on Cumis issues. The presentation featured an in depth review of recent cases, practical considerations, ethical issues, and resolution strategies related to Civil Code section 2860 disputes. Mr. Susolik also debated the thorny issues that arise out of insureds’ requests for independent “Cumis” counsel with counsel for insurance companies, who provided the insurance company perspective.

Mr. Susolik has been speaking to lawyers and in-house counsel on insurance issues for over 20 years, and has presented over 100 seminars and presentations on insurance issues during that time. On August 13, 2013, Edward Susolik presented an informative and practical seminar entitled “Risk Management for In-House Counsel: Using Insurance to Manage Risk for Your Company, Your Directors and Yourself” to corporate and in-house counsel from Orange County, California. The presentation was sponsored by the Corporate Counsel Section of the Orange County Bar Association, at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach, California.

The seminar addressed the various insurance issues in-house counsel must assess in protecting their company, their directors and even themselves with insurance. In addition, Mr. Susolik also examined creative approaches to risk management using insurance and other vehicles.

Mr. Susolik has been speaking to in-house and corporate counsel on insurance issues for over 15 years, and has presented over 25 seminars and presentations specifically for corporate counsel on insurance issues during that time. In addition to presentations for the OCBA Corporate Counsel section and the OCBA Business Litigation section, Mr. Susolik has presented many seminars on insurance and litigation issues and strategies to the Southern California chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel.

In May of 2013, Edward Susolik spoke at the prestigious Rutter Guide “Critical Issues in Insurance Litigation” Seminar. Mr. Susolik will spoke in San Francisco on May 7, 2013, and in Los Angeles on May 9, 2013. Mr. Susolik was part of an expert insurance panel that provided an informative presentation on insurance law to over 100 attorneys. The presentation, which was videotaped, discussed various insurance issues, including bad faith, duty to settle, punitive damages, Cumis counsel and Civil Code section 2860, class actions, advertising injury, policy interpretation, directors and officers insurance and other recent developments in insurance law and insurance litigation.


April 2, 2013 – edward susolik gave presentation on “mediation secrets and strategies: the art and science of settlement” for the orange county women lawyers association

On April 2, 2013, Edward Susolik presented an informative and practical seminar entitled ” Mediation Secrets and Strategies: The Art and Science of Settlement” to the Orange County Women Lawyers Association.

February 27, 2013 – edward susolik provided seminar on “cross-examination in the movies” to the american inns of court

On February 27, 2013, Edward Susolik provided an informative and hard-hitting presentation on “Cross-Examination in the Movies” to the Banyard Inn chapter of the American Inns of Court.

The program discussed depictions of cross-examination in various Hollywood classic films, including A Witness for the Prosecution, Caine Mutiny, A Few Good Men and Anatomy of a Murder.

Mr. Susolik’s co-speaker was the esteemed Judge Thierry Colaw of the Orange County Superior Court, one of the most highly respected judicial officers in the state of California.

On September 17, 2012, Edward Susolik and his co-panelists presented an informative and practical seminar entitled “Follow the Money: Tips, Strategies and Special Issues Associated with Settling Insured Claims” to the Orange County Bar Association. This program was a joint presentation of the OCBA Alternative Dispute Resolution Section and the OCBA Insurance Law Section.

The seminar is a cross-over program that addresses some of the special issues related to insured claims from the perspective of the insured, insurer, third party claimant and their respective counsel in the context of planning and executing an effective strategy for achieving a settlement at mediation. On September 7, 2012, Daniel J. Callahan, along with his co-speakers, presented an informative seminar entitled “The Art of Closing: Invaluable Tips on Closing Arguments by the Masters” to the Business Litigation Section of the Orange County Bar Association.

The seminar provided an informative and practical exposition on techniques and strategies for Closing Argument. The topics covered included both plaintiff and defense perspectives, use of themes, incorporation of evidence and testimony, rules and procedures, objections, the judicial perspective and related subjects. The seminar drew an extremely large audience, cutting across all aspects of litigation (both plaintiff and defendant) and expertise (from trial novice to expert).

Mr. Callahan’s co-speakers at the seminar were the esteemed Honorable Andrew J. Guilford, of the U.S District Court for the Central District of California, who will provide the judicial perspective, and the highly respected trial attorney Todd C. Theodora, of the law firm of Theodora Oringer PC.

June 21, 2012 — edward susolik provided “policyholder perspective” at orange county bar association “annual insurance law update” seminar

On June 21, 2012, Edward Susolik provided the policyholder perspective for the 16th straight year at the Orange County Bar Association “Annual Insurance Law Update” seminar. Among the topics that Mr. Susolik discussed were bad faith, insurance coverage issues, litigation strategies, review of California Supreme Court cases, the duty to defend, Cumis counsel, punitive damages and numerous other insurance topics.

In addition, Mr. Susolik provided his annual hour-long Survey of 2011/2012 Insurance Cases, which is an analysis and summary of all insurance cases decided by California state and federal courts during the last 12 months. Mr. Susolik has provided this annual survey, which is typically the highlight of the seminar, for the last 16 years. Further, Mr. Susolik provided his highly valued handout to all attendees which contains written detailed case summaries and analyses of all of the insurance cases decided during the last 12 months.

On May 10, 2012, Edward Susolik presented an informative and practical seminar entitled “Insurance Coverage and Liability Issues for Brokers” to the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of Orange County.

The seminar provided a comprehensive analysis of insurance law issues for insurance brokers. Mr. Susolik will provide a policyholder perspective on a broad-ranging number of insurance issues, including the duty to defend, Cumis counsel, coverage and bad faith issues and other critical and practical applications. Mr. Susolik also covered various liability issues facing brokers, including litigation and E&O insurance issues.

The seminar drew an extremely large and sophisticated audience, addressing key issues for brokers and agents and their customers, whether business or individual.

The seminar was held at the Tustin Business Center in Tustin, California, from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM on May 10, 2012.

March 2, 2012 – edward susolik spoke on “insurance law for business litigators” for the orange county bar association

On March 2, 2012, Edward Susolik presented his informative and practical seminar entitled “Insurance Law for Business Litigators” to the Business Litigation Section of the Orange County Bar Association. This was the 4th time in the last 20 years that the Business Litigation section has asked Mr. Susolik to present this powerful seminar to its members.

The seminar provided a comprehensive analysis of insurance law issues for business litigation attorneys of all types, whether plaintiff or defense. Mr. Susolik will provide the policyholder perspective on the various insurance issues arising out of business litigation, including the duty to defend, Cumis counsel, coverage and bad faith issues and other critical and practical applications. The seminar typically draws an extremely large audience, cutting across all aspects of business litigation (both plaintiff and defendant) and insurance expertise (from insurance novice to expert).

Mr. Susolik’s co-speaker at the seminar was the esteemed Neil Selman, managing partner of Selman Breitman. Mr. Selman will provide the insurance company perspective on the various matters discussed. Mr. Susolik and Selman, in addition to being friends, have opposed each other in many cases during the last 20 years and have presented numerous seminars and speeches on insurance law, including an annual seminar on “Insurance Law for Litigators” to the State Bar Convention during the last six years.

On February 11, 2012, Edward Susolik spoke at the prestigious Rutter Guide/California Judges Association Litigation Update Seminar in Universal City, California. Mr. Susolik provided an informative presentation on Insurance Law to over 100 judges and attorneys. The presentation, which was videotaped, discussed various insurance issues, including coverage issues for advertising injury, policy interpretation and directors and officers insurance coverage.


January 14, 2012 – edward susolik presented “insurance law update” seminar at orange county bar association “last dash”

On January 14, 2012, Edward Susolik presented an informative MCLE presentation at the annual Orange County Bar Association “Last Dash” MCLE Seminar. Mr. Susolik presented his seminar entitled “Insurance Law Update.” Among the topics that Mr. Susolik covered were the policy of insurance law, bad faith, insurance coverage, litigation strategies, review of recent cases, the duty to defend, Cumis counsel, punitive damages and numerous other insurance topics.

Mr. Susolik has presented over 100 seminars and speeches during the last 20 years. For example, Mr. Susolik was Chair for 11 years straight of the OCBA Insurance Law Section, and has volunteered hundreds of hours to the Orange County Bar Association through educational and other activities.

The seminar was held at Whittier Law School at 3333 Harbor Boulevard in Costa Mesa, California.
