How can I avoid dangerous driving habits?

As a driver in California, you know that safe driving is crucial to prevent accidents from occurring. However, many motorists unwittingly partake in dangerous driving behaviors, which can easily lead to disaster under the right circumstances. To this end, it’s important to be aware of which driving habits are unsafe, as well as know the ways to prevent such behaviors.

According to the General Services Administration, there are a number of unsafe habits all drivers should avoid to ensure safety remains a top priority on the road. Improper passing of another vehicle is just one area where drivers must utilize the right technique to decrease the risk of collision. In this case, it’s recommended that you remain at least three seconds behind the vehicle in front of you to allow enough time for a sudden stop. Next, use your turn signal and check all blind spots before merging into the passing lane. In the passing lane speed can be increased to clear the adjacent vehicle, but should never breach the posted speed limit.

In the same token as above, you must also be cautious about driving too closely behind another vehicle in all situations. You must consider that your reaction time plays a key role in this case; even if you have ample time to stop, a diminished reaction time can result in a crash if you are not properly prepared. That means you must always be alert and aware on the road to make certain you can react in an appropriate manner.

Lastly, be sure to keep your speed in check while driving. Speeding is cited in many fatal incidents, and can be particularly dangerous when combined with other dangerous driving behaviors (such as drinking). You should always be acutely aware of the speed limit where you are driving, and you should alter your speed if certain conditions are present. Inclement weather often calls for a reduction of speed, as does traveling through work areas.
