What is a concussion?

Concussion can occur to virtually anyone in California, and may have a lasting impact on your health and well-being. That’s why it’s so important to understand the full ramifications of this type of brain injury, as well as being aware of the signs and symptoms. In some cases, immediate medical attention may be required to prevent further complications from occurring.

According to, concussions can occur due to an impact injury, or as a result of a whiplash (where the brain is propelled back and forth in a violent manner). Concussions can be caused by a variety of circumstances, such as during a car accident, because of a fall, or while participating in a sport. Concussions are typically considered mild injuries, but they can be serious or even life-threatening depending on the circumstances.

It’s crucial that you know the common signs of a concussion to ensure you receive timely medical treatment. People suffering from a concussion typically experience an altered mental state, which can result in trouble remembering, confusion, or even irritability. Physical symptoms may also occur, including nausea, headache, or blurred vision. While symptoms can present directly after the injury, for some people they can take weeks or even months before appearing.

If your concussion is considered serious, you may need to undergo a CT scan in order to properly diagnose it. For less severe injuries, your doctor will simply ask questions about how the injury occurred, or utilize a specialized eye test to test for signs of a concussion. In this case, your doctor will note the size of your pupils as well as eye movements.
